CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

Non-diplomats can import duty free provided they have owned and used for 12 months prior to shipping and must be imported within 6 months of residence visa being issued. New items will be dutiable at varying rates based on invoice value. To clear JVK needs:

• Passport copy with residence visa
• Packing list (with values for any new items)
• Completed Vanuatu Unaccompanied Effects Declaration (provided by JVK)
• Freight invoice (required for calculation of CIF value for Customs declaration)
• Immigration Stamp when you last arrived into Vanuatu

Shipments are subject to inspection by both Customs and Quarantine. Most FCLs are subject to mandatory fumigation the charges for which are EXCLUDED from our rates. Shipments can take 2-4 days to clear.

Diplomats require duty free certificate issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is generally only applied for once Arrival Notice has been received as the actual vessel name and number is required. These generally take 2-4 working days to obtain and then 2-4 days to clear. Diplomatic shipments can be cleared prior to arrival of shipper.

All shipments must be ISPM15 compliant.

PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS

Never mix personal effects with commercial goods.

Generally, pornography, guns, fireworks, narcotics, gambling instruments, and subversive or offensive literature are banned as are agricultural products.

Special import permits are required for most major electrical appliances (ie fridge, freezer, aircon units, TV, washer/dryer, vacuum cleaners. If any of these are items are shipped JVK will need make/model/age/value and serial number in advance.

Small amounts of packaged food and drinks can shipped but will be dutiable. If alcohol is shipment we will need type/proof/value. Duty rates are very high.

MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)

Non-diplomats can import one car and a personal use boat (as long as it can towed by a passenger vehicle it owned and used for at least 12 months prior to shipping and within 6 months of residence visa being issued). These permissions can only be granted once. No motor bikes can be imported duty free. Check with JVK before shipping.

ANIMALS AND PETS

Pets may be imported but a valid Import Permit is required to be issued prior to arrival of the pet. Pets must be forwarded as manifested cargo under an Airway Bill (not hand carried). To apply for an Import Permit we require the general details of the pet (name, sex, breed, age, color). Import Permits can take up to 2 weeks to issue and shipments MUST NOT be forwarded without an Import Permit. When the pet is forwarded it is essential that the rabies vaccination and general vaccination certificates are attached to the Airway Bill. Contact JVK for more details.
